What to Read Next

I love the time when I am finished a book, and I decide what I'm going to read next. I feel like I am picking out a present for myself.

I always have one poetry book and one prose book that I'm reading at any given time. Right now I'm reading Atwood's The Blind Assassin (love it so far), and I just picked out Hoagland's Donkey Gospel.

Valerie Loveland, Poet

The guy at the copy shop said that Poet was the weirdest profession he has ever printed on a business card.

The Homestead

I went to Emily Dickinson's house yesterday with Kris and my poet friend Joanie. We saw both houses: The Homestead, where Emily lived, and The Evergreens, where her brother Austin and his wife lived. A lot of Austin's house had original furniture and art and one of the rooms hadn't been touched since the 1800's (Gilbert's room was kept exactly as he left it when he died when he was a child in 1883). I loved seeing the houses and it really made me think of Emily Dickinson more as a person instead of just made of poetry or a recluse hidden away.

Last night I dreamed I lived in the two houses, with their pianos, and dark wallpaper; creaking up the stairs and keeping Gilbert's room shut.

Everything Emily

I read at an Emily Dickinson tribute reading yesterday afternoon. I thought everyone would be reading her famous poems, so I picked out a more obscure poem "I Started Early--Took My Dog." Someone else read it, so I figured I should just read the poem I think is the most famous: "Because I Could Not Stop For Death, He Kindly Stopped For Me." It was a fun reading, and I really liked how everyone was reading a poet who wasn't there.

Next weekend, I am driving to Emily Dickinson's house. Maybe I'll read some more poems, and a bit of White Heat and declare it Emily Dickinson Month!
